Dr. Fannie Gaston-Johansson, DrMedSc, RN, FAAN has been named a recipient of the 2005 Johns Hopkins University Diversity Recognition Awards. The annual awards acknowledge faculty, staff and students whose efforts contribute to the celebration of diversity and inclusiveness in the Johns Hopkins culture and environment.
Dr. Gaston-Johansson, the first African American woman to receive tenure and full professorship on the Johns Hopkins nursing faculty, exemplifies leadership in the promotion of diversity through her research in health disparities and her work to create research opportunities for minority students, faculty and minority serving institutions.
She is committed not only to increasing diversity but also to mentoring students and faculty from a wide variety of backgrounds. Many of those she has mentored are now in MSN and doctoral studies in prestigious universities, in research careers in the US and abroad, and in tenure track positions at leading schools of nursing.
“All of us at the SON are proud to be among the many audiences who are benefiting from Dr. Gaston-Johansson’s resolve to create nurses who have a broad cultural background and are capable of bringing professional services to a global society,” says Jacquelyn Campbell, PhD, RN, FAAN, associate dean for faculty affairs at the School of Nursing and a prior recipient of the Diversity Leadership Award.

President William R. Brody will present the awards at a reception and ceremony on Tuesday, May 3, from noon to 2 p.m., in Homewood’s Shriver Hall Auditorium.
