School of Nursing Interim Dean Martha N. Hill, PhD, RN, was in the national news this week, including the front page of The New York Times. Dr. Hill was quoted and recognized for her role as co-vice chair of an Institute of Medicine (IOM) panel that released a report on the disparities minority populations experience in health care delivery.

The IOM reports says that minorities in the United States receive lower quality health care than whites, even when insurance and income are the same. The report also says that these disparities contribute to shorter life spans and higher death rates.

Dr. Hill was quoted in The New York Times as saying, “The differences are pervasive. It cuts across all conditions of health and across the entire country, and we think this is a very serious moral issue.
