A new web site devoted to palliative care provides a comprehensive resource for nursing professionals who seek the latest information on caring for patients during the last stages of life.
“Palliativecarenursing.net is designed to be an electronic hub for nurses to access when seeking current information and education on end-of-life care,” said Cynda Rushton, Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing.
The web site is an outcome of a meeting held last fall by the Nursing Leadership Academy for End-of-Life Care. “Because nurses in all specialties care daily for patients who are dying, we understand what the issues are for patients and their families” said Rushton. The Academy, created by the Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing, was funded by a grant from the Open Society Institute’s Project on Death in America.
“With solid support of 22 national nursing organizations representing 463,000 nurses, we are positioning ourselves to transform end-of-life patient care,” said Kathleen Hartman Sabatier, Director at The Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing. Each of the 22 participating organizations has formed an action plan to mobilize support of palliative care nursing reform. “The web site is a vehicle that will help keep nurses informed so that we can speak with one voice about end-of-life care and make a difference in quality of life at the end of life.”
