Jerilyn K. Allen, ScD, RN, FAAN, has been named director of the PhD program at The Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. Dr. Allen is currently a professor at the School of Nursing with a joint appointment at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She is a nationally-known expert in the field of cardiovascular nursing research. Dr. Allen’s research has added substantially to the understanding of cardiovascular risk factors, recovery, and lifestyle modification in persons with or at high risk for the development of cardiovascular disease. Her research was among the first in nursing to focus on risk-reducing interventions in women with cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Allen received a doctoral degree from The Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health. As the principal investigator and co-investigator on research teams in the medical and public health arenas, she has advocated for issues critical to nursing. Dr. Allen has presented her work nationally and internationally and authored numerous publications in nursing and medical journals.
“With her strong foundation in nursing research, Dr. Allen is the natural choice to lead our PhD program,” says Sue K. Donaldson, PhD, RN, FAAN, dean of the School of Nursing. “Nursing students come to Hopkins because they know they will be educated by stellar faculty members who are experts in their fields. Dr. Allen will lead our doctoral students as they shape the scope of their research and prepare to become leaders in nursing.”
Established in 1993, the School of Nursing’s PhD program is an individualized course of study in selected areas of research such as cardiovascular risk reduction, domestic violence, care of geriatric patients, symptom management, nursing outcomes, and pain management.
