Kimberly Connolly, a junior at The Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, is one of 20 nursing students nationwide to be named a Fuld Fellow. For the past decade, the Helene Fuld Health Trust, HSBC Bank USA, has contributed to the education and development of nursing students by choosing a select group of participants for its annual Fuld Fellowship Program for emerging nurse leaders.
Connolly, a native of Connecticut, received a bachelor’s degree in political science from Dickinson College before pursuing a nursing degree at Johns Hopkins. She also spent time in the Peace Corps, providing health education for mothers and their children in Niger, West Africa.
The 1999 Fuld Fellows will attend two meetings in June, a leadership retreat, and the International Council of Nurses conference in London.
“I am surprised and flattered to have been selected as a Fuld Fellow,” says Connolly. “I look forward to strengthening my leadership skills. The nursing program here at Hopkins has helped me excel. My classmates come from many diverse backgrounds and the faculty have an expertise that is unsurpassed.”
The Fuld Fellowship Program focuses on three goals: developing individual capacity for leadership, strengthening understanding of broader health care systems, and providing a foundation for understanding the effects of public policy on health care delivery and nursing practice.
After she graduates next year, Connolly plans to practice nursing either overseas or in some of the rural areas of the United States.
