Seven Faculty and Alumni Inducted as Fellows of the American Academy of Nursing

Seven esteemed faculty members and alumni from the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing (JHSON) have been honored as fellows of the American Academy of Nursing. Induction into the Academy recognizes their commitment to nursing leadership and signifies a commitment to elevating the profession, influencing health care policy, and fostering advancements that shape the future of nursing and improve patient care.

“These new fellows are not just a credit to our community, they are driving the future of nursing and health. Their induction as FAANs will open doors to resources so they may have an even greater impact,” says JHSON Dean Sarah Szanton, PhD, RN, FAAN.

They join an elite group of over 3,000 fellows, recognized as the most accomplished leaders in nursing across policy, research, administration, clinical practice, and academia.

The 2024 Hopkins Nursing inductees include:

Rebecca R.S. Clark, PhD, MSN, RN, CNM, WHNP-BC 
Alumna

Rebecca R. S. Clark, PhD, RN, is faculty at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing Nursing and serves as the Nurse Scientist at Pennsylvania Hospital. She is dedicated to transforming inpatient maternity care in the U.S. and her work focuses on system-level interventions that improve birth equity, safety, and outcomes, especially for opioid-dependent women. Dr. Clark earned her PhD at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing.

Clara M. Gona, PhD, FNP-BC 
Alumna

Clara M. Gona, PhD, FNP-BC, is an associate professor at the MGH Institute of Health Professions, School of Nursing. She is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner and an external Faculty Nurse Scientist at the Yvonne L. Munn Center for Nursing Research at MGH. Dr. Gona’s research focuses on cardiovascular disease risk in African immigrants through culturally targeted interventions, as well as advancing justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in nursing education. She earned her BSN at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing.

Kelli Garber, DNP, APRN, PPCNP-BC
Alumna

Kelli Garber, DNP, APRN, PPCNP-BC is an Associate Professor and Director of the DNP Advanced Practice Program at the Ellmer School of Nursing at Old Dominion University. A Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner with over 25 years of experience, she is internationally recognized for her work in telehealth, especially in best practices, policy, and education. Dr. Garber, also a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, earned her BSN at Johns Hopkins University.

Melissa D. Hladek, PhD, CRNP, FNP-BC
Assistant professor and alumna

Melissa deCardi Hladek, PhD, CRNP, FNP-BC, is an Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, where she researches the impact of stress and social factors on aging, chronic disease, and frailty. Her work centers on developing strengths-based strategies to improve health outcomes and amplify patient voices in health care. Dr. Hladek also practices at Esperanza Center in Baltimore, serving vulnerable communities, and leads as President of the NAHN-DC Metro Chapter.

Danielle K. McCamey, DNP, ACNP-BC, FCCP 
Assistant professor

Dr. Danielle McCamey, an acute care nurse practitioner with nearly 20 years of nursing experience, specializes in perianesthesia, palliative, and critical care. She is the founder of DNPs of Color, a national nonprofit fostering diversity in doctoral nursing through networking, mentorship, and advocacy. She is also a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians, where she chairs the Palliative and End of Life Care Network, advancing education and practice in palliative care.

Kathleen A. Schachman, PhD, FNP-BC, PMHNP-BC, FIAAN, FAANP 
Alumna

Kathleen A. Schachman, PhD, FNP-BC, PMHNP-BC, FIAAN, FAANP is an endowed Professor at Saginaw Valley State University and is the coordinator of their PMHNP program. She earned her Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) certification from Johns Hopkins.

Laurie A. Saletnik, DNP, RN, CNOR
Alumna

Laurie A. Saletnik is Senior Director of Nursing for Perioperative Services at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Editor‐in‐Chief for the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses journal. She earned her DNP from the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing.

The honorees were inducted at the AAN’s policy conference taking place October 31 – November 2, 2024.
