DNP Advanced Practice Essay Response Highlight

DNP Advanced Practice Essay Response Highlight

As you consider applying for our DNP Advanced Practice programs, the essay component is an excellent opportunity to stand out as a competitive applicant. The Admissions Committee is eager to learn more about your interest in the program, role, and future impact. When crafting your essay response, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • The essay is where you demonstrate your understanding of the DNP degree and clearly describe why you are interested in the DNP degree over an MSN degree and why this degree will help you better care for the patient populations you plan to serve. Resources such as the AANC website and The Role of a Doctorally Prepared Nurse Admissions Workshop can be helpful in learning more about the DNP degree.
  • Your essay should also clearly outline why you have chosen the advanced practice role and the specific population it serves. Feel free to discuss how your previous experience has led you to this decision. Most importantly, allow your essay to showcase your passion for this particular population and how you aspire to impact patients’ health.
  • During the program, you will also complete a DNP scholarly project. The scholarly project will tend to align with the nursing specialty you have chosen to apply to. Clearly describing a clinical problem you hope to address through innovative ideas and previous research findings will allow you to display your genuine passion for improving health care outcomes. Resources such as the AACN website or the JHUSON DNP Projects webpage can help you better understand the DNP project.
  • Proofread your essays and be sure you’ve answered each essay question thoroughly. This will allow you to catch any grammatical errors or revisit any part of your essay that may need further expansion. The essays are one component of the holistic application review that the Admissions Committee uses when considering an invitation to participate in a faculty interview.

Finalizing all the components of your application takes time, so don’t rush. As always, don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions about the application process.
