New Year Resolution: Pursuing New Steps in Careers

The New Year is a time for people to make resolutions and plans for the future. When deciding what you want to do with your career, one of the significant resources within the School of Nursing is the Career Lab, which helps students in many ways during their time in the program and after graduation.  Rachel Wobrak, Assistant Director of the Career Lab, said, “The Career Lab is here to help you. This might be your first nursing job search, but we’ve been through it before with other students and can help. We’ve learned from employers recruiting nurses and other students’ job searches, so we have a lot of collective knowledge and created resources to help.”  Below are some ways that the Career Lab can help with your job search:

The first step is making an account on Handshake; the one-stop shop for the Career Lab. This is where events are posted that they are hosting throughout the year. You can also make an individual appointment with them to review your resume and cover letter. Lastly, they have an incredible library of resources available that students can access at any time. Handshake is so easy to join, just use your JHED ID!

Career Lab Events

The Career Lab will host several career fairs both virtually and in-person during the academic year. About 25 hospitals allow students to learn about nursing career opportunities within their organizations and begin networking with nurse recruiter professionals.  These events are geared towards MSN Entry into Nursing students who are in their fourth and fifth semesters. For students in our advanced programs, the Career Lab will present during on-site immersions to discuss career opportunities and ways to utilize their available resources. Lastly, they also have an Employer Information session, where different individual organizations will come in and discuss all their employment opportunities and where they are hiring.

Alumni Opportunities

With our large Alumni network, the Career Lab provides students with opportunities to connect with alum through various virtual events, including panels about traditional and non-traditional nursing career paths. One of their more unique events is a job search panel for those seeking licensure and job opportunities in the state of California. For very recent graduates, the office also provides a virtual panel geared towards their needs in regards to the job market.

You can also make virtual or in-person appointments with the staff in Handshake. In these meetings the Career Lab staff can review your cover letter and resume, and help you practice your interview skills. They can even set up a mock interview! Students from all programs are able to access their resources and set up appointments to talk through their individual career needs. Current students can also sign up to receive a weekly email newsletter which includes valuable information and upcoming events. Contact the Career Lab via email at [email protected].
