Hopkins Nurses see a need and make a way—that’s what “leadership at every level” means. It’s not necessarily “everyone becomes a Chief Nursing Officer,” it’s leading the way in practice change in every setting.
And although they have yet to graduate, our student leaders are model Hopkins Nurses. As Dean Davidson puts it, “We pride ourselves on developing leaders and you are the cream of the crop.”

Innovation Award, Asian Pacific American Nursing Students Association (APANSA)
The inaugural year of APANSA was wildly successful! The leaders stuck to their mission of providing a means for all students to experience Asian culture and learn about issues facing Asian and Asian American communities. They have offered Lunar New Year events, Harvest Moon events, a panel in integrative medicine and more. Thank you for building this important group into our community.
Innovation Award, Men In Nursing
In 2019, the Men in Nursing group became a chapter of the American Association for Men in Nursing, started a leadership speaker series that included Dean Davidson and Ernest Grant, president of the American Nurses Association. The school of nursing received the Best Schools for Men in Nursing this year as well, so this is a great time for men in nursing. Thanks for all of the work you have done.
Humanitarian Award, Gertrude Stein Society
The Gertrude Stein Society is a tri-school organization led by Albert Bernabe, Cory Martin, Kirby, Midori Trojanowski, Yumiko Hiroto, Bianca Palmisano, and Rachel Furst. They have refocused the importance of support for the LGBTQ community at the school of nursing. Through their diversity month in September, and their involvement in Pride in Baltimore and in Washington DC, they showcase our values of diversity and inclusion. Thank you for championing a lasting presence of GSS at the School of Nursing!
Unsung Hero Award: Khristine Arrieta, President of the Graduate Student Specialty Organization
Khristine has done great work to be inclusive of DNP students in Baltimore and our distance students around the country. She has partnered with Student Affairs to kick off a DNP mentoring program, worked with community partner Art with a Heart, and much more
Student Leaders of the Year
The Mental Health Grad Student Network is a newly formed peer support group founded by students. They work to support and promote the mental health of students as well as to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health conditions. They have offered pizza with professors, whine and wine events (which were very well attended), and have invested in making the school of nursing a safe space to talk and work through concerns with peers. Thank you for all you have done this year!
