In an era of rapid transformation, the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Post-Master’s Track at Johns Hopkins School of Nursing offers a dynamic platform for nurses to lead change across healthcare systems, education, policy, and global health. With six cutting-edge specializations—Leadership, Health Policy, Planetary Health, Nursing Education, Global Health, and Artificial Intelligence (AI)—this program empowers nurses to become visionary leaders and change-makers.

Leadership

The Leadership specialization equips nurses with the tools to lead within healthcare organizations and communities. Courses explore organizational behavior, ethics, motivation, and team management. Students also gain expertise in healthcare economics, quality and safety, and personal growth strategies to shape impactful leadership trajectories.

Health Policy

In the Health Policy track, nurses delve into the intricacies of U.S. healthcare systems, pharmaceutical policy, and social policy for marginalized populations. Through mock congressional hearings and policy analysis exercises, students learn to influence legislation and advocate for equitable health outcomes.

Planetary Health

Planetary Health is a transdisciplinary field that examines how environmental disruptions affect human health. At Johns Hopkins, students explore climate change science, food systems, and planetary health law. They learn to design adaptation and mitigation strategies for global health challenges. At UW–Madison, DNP students like Ashley Smith are integrating planetary health into curricula and leading initiatives such as the Planetary Health Report Card, which evaluates how well nursing programs address environmental health.

Global Health

The Global Health specialization prepares nurses to tackle infectious disease threats, lead international health initiatives, and launch global health nonprofits. Courses emphasize leadership, policy, and entrepreneurship, with a strong focus on women’s leadership and health worker training.

Nursing Education

This specialization focuses on curriculum development, instructional strategies, and program evaluation. Students learn to teach in both traditional and online environments and may earn a certificate or sit for the Certified Nurse Educator exam. The emphasis is on creating engaging, inclusive, and evidence-based learning experiences.

Artificial Intelligence

AI is revolutionizing nursing education and practice. At Johns Hopkins, the AI specialization explores machine learning, autonomous systems, and neuromarketing. Students examine ethical, cognitive, and behavioral dimensions of AI in healthcare. Across nursing schools, AI is being integrated into curricula through simulation training, remote monitoring, and virtual admissions. The CHECK framework—Collaborative, Harmonious, Ethical, Clear, and Kind—guides responsible AI use in education, promoting transparency, academic integrity, and student well-being.

The DNP Post-Master’s Track at Johns Hopkins is more than a degree—it’s a launchpad for nurses to lead transformational change. Whether addressing climate resilience, shaping policy, educating future nurses, or harnessing AI, these specializations prepare nurses to meet the challenges of tomorrow with innovation, compassion, and leadership.
