A 2023 survey of nursing students found a strong interest in using AI in their future practice. What steps must nursing schools take to build future professionals who understand AI’s problem-solving abilities—and its limitations—well enough to maximize its use in patient care? This is the focus of “Artificial Intelligence (AI) Applications in Healthcare and Considerations for Nursing Education” by Leigh Montejo*, Ashley Fenton, and Gerrin Davis (Nurse Education in Practice), who find that AI might even reduce nurse educator workload.
(Projections suggest that the financial impact of AI on U.S. health care will increase to $67.4 billion by 2027 from $6.9 billion in 2021 as its efficiency and accuracy continue to improve.)
“There are many opportunities to integrate AI into nursing curricula, including the integration into simulation or use in course assignments or activities to enhance student learning,” the authors report, encouraging “recognition that the use of AI applications is not a risk to the nursing profession, but a valuable tool to support education and safe and efficient patient care.”
