Welcoming the Community: Local High Schoolers Spend a Day as Nursing Students

The Johns Hopkins School of Nursing Black Student Nurses Association welcomed students from Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School to show what an education in nursing looks like at Hopkins. These students got a first-hand look at what School of Nursing students do to prepare for a career in nursing. The visiting students practiced CPR on high-fidelity mannequins, simulated what it’s like to be a nurse in a hospital setting, and heard from a panel of current nursing students about why they chose nursing and what they plan to do once they graduate.

The BSNA understands the value of engaging with the local community, which is why they welcomed students from Dunbar High School for this special event. Organizing this experience required careful planning, collaboration, and a genuine passion for making a difference. Together, the team designed an event that offered students meaningful, hands-on exposure to various medical scenarios.

“We were once high school students looking forward to embarking on a new journey in our lives, so we wanted to showcase to the students that all that they dream of achieving is possible. Showcasing our talents and work was also important for this particular group of students because they were all students of color,” says Dezneaire Billings, a MSN (Entry Into Nursing) student and member of the BSNA.

For generations, students of color were often overlooked and denied access to educational opportunities. Through this event, the BSNA demonstrated that despite those historical barriers, they continue to rise and thrive.

Here’s what some School of Nursing students BSNA had to say about the event:

“When we walk these halls, we carry the dreams of those who came before us and make space for those who will follow. We’re honored to welcome the next generation of healthcare leaders from Dunbar High School.” – Olivia Merchant, BSNA President

“Representation saves lives. As Black student nurses, we proudly show Dunbar students that their place in healthcare is not only possible—it’s powerful.” – Dezneaire Billings, BSNA Member

“Your story, your voice, and your purpose matter. Let this visit begin a journey where you see yourself in scrubs, in healthcare leadership, and at the forefront of change.” – Dylan Lopez, MSN (Entry Into Nursing) Student Volunteer

The School of Nursing looks forward to continuing this partnership and welcoming more students from Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School to experience everything we have to offer.
