Faculty—Health Systems
& Outcomes

Patti Abbott, PhD, RN, was asked to serve as a visiting professor for the National Institutes of Health National Library of Medicine Biomedical Informatics Training Program starting in June. She has also been invited to serve a four-year term on the NIH Center for Scientific Review Biomedical Computing and Health Informatics Study section.

Dean Martha N. Hill, PhD, RN, was honored as one of The Daily Record’s 2011 Top 100 Women in March. This is Hill’s third year on the list, which earned her the added distinction of being inducted into the Circle of Excellence.

Maryann Fralic, DrPH, RN, attended the 200th anniversary of Massachusetts General Hospital in April to celebrate their rich nursing legacy. She conducted grand rounds for nursing leadership and staff on the topic of strategic leadership.

Faculty—Acute & Chronic Care

Anne Belcher, PhD, RN, was appointed to the Oncology Nursing Society Foundation Board of Trustees in April. She was also invited to join the National League for Nursing Education Research Priorities Think Tank in January.

Fannie Gaston-Johansson, PhD, RN,  was inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame in July.

Sharon Olsen, PhD, RN, received the Excellence in Teaching award from the Alumni Association at the All-School Awards Meeting in April.

Cynda Rushton, PhD, RN, an internationally recognized expert in bioethics and palliative care, was promoted to the rank of Professor
in May.

Faculty—Community–Public Health

Jackie Campbell, PhD, RN, was inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame in July.

Jason Farley, PhD, MPH, was appointed as a national co-chair of the Global Health Committee within the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care
in February.

Betty Jordan, DNSc, MSN, was invited by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to an announcement and panel discussion on maternal health in honor of Mother’s Day at the Department of S

tate in May. She was also among The Daily Record’s 2011 Top 100 Women in March.

Jodi Shaefer, PhD, RN, traveled to Japan in February to present the School’s Evidence-Based Practice model to faculty, staff, and students at the University
of Shizuoka.

Nicole Warren, PhD, MPH, received the Excellence in Teaching awards from the Alumni Association at the All-School Awards Meeting in April.

Students

Two students from the traditional class of 2012 were elected to the Maryland Student Nurses Association Board of Directors at the convention in January. Jacqueline Johnson is now the organization’s Community Health Director and Kari Hatfield is the Break Through to Nursing Director.

PhD student Jeanne Alheusen earned a first place award in the Community Public Health category for her poster presentation at the Women’s Health 2011 19th Annual Congress in Washington, DC in April. The poster, entitled “The Role of Intimate Partner Violence in Predicting Adverse Neonatal Outcomes Among Low-Income African American Women,” will be published in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Women’s Health.

PhD student Vinciya Pandian was selected to be a presenter at the 2011 National Predoctoral Clinical Research Training Program Meeting in May. She is also presenting at the 35th Annual Society of Otorhinolaryngology Head-Neck Nurses Congress in September in San Francisco, CA. Vinciya’s article, “Model for Best Practice: Nurse Practitioner Facilitated Tracheostomy Service,” is featured in the ORL-Head and Neck Nursing Journal.

DNP student Kimberly Elenberg led a 150-person medical team to the Mississippi flood area in May.

 

DNP student Kimberly Elenberg, a captain in the United States Public Health Service, was deployed in response to the flooding along the Mississippi River in May. She is responsible for mobilizing staff and resources in times of national disaster and is currently leading 150 medical team members.

PhD student Katia Reinert received the 2011 American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Foundation Humanitarian Award in May, which recognizes AANP nurse practitioners who have made humanitarian contributions in diverse and important ways.

StaffFrank Byrd, a Protective Service Officer at the School, received a Distinguished Service Award from the Maryland Chapter of the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety on April 29, in recognition of his response to a fire in the 500 block of Washington Street in May 2010. Byrd oversees the Jefferson Parking Lot behind the School and has worked for Hopkins for 25 years.

Team Efforts

Faculty members Anne Belcher, PhD, RN, and Rosemary Mortimer, MS, MSEd, RN, and students Samuel
Hoffman, Bethany Roth, and Sarah Schlotterbeck from the traditional class of 2011 attended the 31st annual Maryland Association of Nursing Students (MANS) convention on January 29. Belcher and Mortimer presented, Roth announced the 2011-2012 MANS board of directors, and Hoffman offered closing remarks.

The Office of Marketing and Communications has earned several awards for their work: a silver 2011 Aster Award for magazine advertising;  a gold Service Industry Advertising Award for both the website homepage and Hopkins Nursing E-News; and a silver Accolades Award from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education District II for the website blogs.
