Church Notes

By Deborah Corteggiano Kennedy ’73

A Place in History

In my last submission of Church Notes, I asked you all to please consider donating to a classroom named in our honor in the new School of Nursing building. They will break ground for this structure in 2008. I have not given up even though I did not hear from any fellow alums since the last publication. Surely there must be 246 other die-hard CHH grads who feel as passionate as I do to retain a place in history. I am asking for a donation of $1,000, which can be given over four years in $250 installments. Of course, no donation is too small and any amount will be appreciated.

For those of you who recall the quotes we wrote in the yearbook under our photos, I’ll just say that one of my favorite quotes placed on my page in 1973 still is:

“Some men see things as they are and say ‘why?’ I dream things that never were and say ‘why not?’” Robert F. Kennedy

So why not get together with fellow classmates and talk about how exciting it would be to have a classroom at the prestigious Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing in honor of Church Home & Hospital School of Nursing? The School of Nursing building addition scheduled to begin construction in 2008 will truly be a state-of-the-art place of learning. Let’s make Church Home & Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association a part of it. Let’s cement our legacy through supporting the future of nursing education.

Homecoming 2007: Be There!

As a member of the Homecoming Committee, I am excited to announce September 28-29, 2007, as a not-to-miss date to put on your calendar. Homecoming events will start at 3 pm on Friday with a very worthwhile discussion on the ever-growing building and enlargement of the Hopkins campus. There will be tours of the hospital and the school. Join us for the cocktail party at 5 pm and enjoy delicious food and beverages while listening to the music of the Todd Simon Jazz trio, a group of Peabody students. Saturday kicks off with breakfast, followed by a talk from Hopkins alumna JoAnn Coleman. If you thought you knew some trivia about Hopkins, you will be thoroughly entertained as JoAnn shares the real story about Halsted, Blalock, and more. The annual lunch begins Saturday at 12:30. The ability to honor our 50 year Jubilarians is something I look forward to with much excitement. I have been able to secure beautiful “Golden Gifts” for the Golden Honorees who attend FREE. Please call me if you have any questions about Homecoming. Be there!

Health Care Heroes Deb Kennedy '73 and Mary Bylen '73

Health Care Heroes

Congratulations to Mary Blueford Bylen ‘73 and Deborah Corteggiano Kennedy ‘73 who were named 2007 Health Care Heroes by The Daily Record. Mary, a PACU nurse at Franklin Square Hospital Center, was nominated for the honor after getting involved in the community and serving disaster victims. Deb was nominated for the award for her commitment to Health Care for the Homeless.

Our Presence at the SON

As I spoke with alums from the Class of ’57, I shared that there are already historical archives from Church Home that are displayed at Hopkins. This information came as a surprise, and I was asked to share within Church Notes more details so others would know.

The beautiful oil portraits of Miss Creutzburg, Miss Nash, and Miss Elliott are all hanging in the fifth floor hall. The Beacon of Hope Ship Story Award is proudly displayed in the SON lobby. I am told this receives a lot of attention and interest. Miss Creutzburg’s dolls for the 30s are restored and are housed in an antique case in the SON Admissions Office lobby. A Church Home uniform, complete with black stockings and shoes, is displayed on a mannequin. Today’s students enjoy the nostalgia even if they don’t envy the apron and pinafore. During Homecoming, alumni are invited to tour the SON building and see where all of these items are displayed. Don’t miss the opportunity and mark September 28-29 on your calendar now!

Nurse Week Honorees

At the Good Samaritan Hospital, two CHH alums were honored during Nurses Week. Catherine Mickelwright Rossetti ’71 and Karen Milwee Zielinski ’72 were named Nurse of the Year Honorees. Cathy, the Nurse Manager of 5 West, was described as being “highly experienced” …[she] “performs all her duties and responsibilities at a level of excellence, she is the heart of 5 West.” Karen was also recognized for her hard work and dedication. Staff noted, “She is the reason for the success of the new ASU.” Congratulations Cathy and Karen!

Class of 53 Keeps Tradition Alive

In October 2006, the Class of ‘53 held its 53rd reunion! That has to be a record. The 11 members of the class who gathered at the home of Dee Stough Sadarananda enjoyed themselves immensely. The class wrote to me with a request that a plea go out to try and locate one member of their class they have lost contact with. If anyone has information about Audrey Schmidt Whelan, who may have served in the military, please contact me. Through Church Notes, the class was able to re-connect with Grace Blain. Let’s help them find Audrey as well.
