Freda Creutzberg Memorial Scholarship Has First Recipient!

Melissa D. Rowe has been named the first recipient of the Freda Creutzburg Memorial Scholarship, established in honor of Church Home & Hospital School of Nursing. Melissa, who is in the accelerated class of 2006, will receive $1,202 toward her nursing education, as interest from the endowed scholarship is awarded.

The daughter of a registered nurse, Melissa grew up in Albany and obtained a bachelor’s degree in social work. Melissa comes to the nursing profession after six years of working with adults with developmental disabilities. Her goal is to obtain a master’s degree and become a clinical nurse specialist with a forensic focus.

Melissa sent her personal thanks for the support and encouragement she has received and made note that she is honored to be the first recipient of this award.

Class Reunions

The Class of 1966 is planning their 40th reunion. Class members should e-mail Donna Royster Swope, the reunion coordinator, at [email protected].

I received this photo and letter from Joyce Dahler Ness and Doretha Stough Sadarananda from the class of 1953, which has been meeting every October for over 30 years. Such camaraderie is almost unheard of and this group is to be complimented for their support of each other over the years. They have lost touch with two classmates: Grace Carpenter Blain and Audry Schmidt Whelan. Please contact me if you know how to reach them.

Church Home Class of 1963

An excerpt from their letter: “The Class of ’53 keeps tradition alive every year. Initially a few of us had lunch together at one of our homes, but later we made a serious commitment to keep in touch with everyone in the class….Over the years we have had reunions in Maryland, Florida, and California and have set the third weekend in October as a tradition…Perhaps coming from an earlier era kept us close. We lived together for three years and learned to work and study together, and console and counsel each other. We wore our whites and blues proudly with our starched collars, caps and of course, those black shoes and stockings! We think of ourselves as true sisters. It’s different today, please forgive us if we feel biased that our way was the best way.”  [email protected]

Your Gifts to the Johns Hopkins Archives Make a Difference

Thanks to all of you who have made gifts to the Church Home and Hospital Archives Fund. We wrote to you, and you responded! At press time, we have received 53 generous contributions—between $10 and $1,000—for a total of $3,765 to help the Alan Mason Chesney Medical Archives catalog and store precious items from Church Home. An additional $400 was added to the fund when we raffled off a nursing doll in pristine condition at the homecoming festivities in October 2005.

Phoebe Evans Letocha, the Johns Hopkins archivist who works most closely with the Church Home and Hospital Nursing Collection, says that she and her colleagues will use the funds to organize and preserve all of the donated Church Home treasures. Funds will help purchase archival supplies, including mylar sleeves and acid-free boxes, folders, and tissue paper to house and protect the collection’s documents, photographs, and artifacts.

Our gifts will also pay a student worker who will help organize and describe the collection. Once work on the collection is complete, the Archives will make the collection description available via its website so that others may learn about the legacy of nursing at the Church Home and Hospital.

Needed

In order to complete the CHH collection, we are in need of the following:

Yearbooks: 1961, 1962, 1963, & 1965.
Class Photos: 1890-1908, 1910, 1913, 1922, 1930, 1945, 1964, 1965, 1967, 1969, 1970, 1971, and 1972.

Thanks to Jane Kaiser, ’68 and Donna Swope, ’66 for their donation of copies of their respective class photos.

The Archives Needs a Volunteer!

Calling all Church Home graduates from the Baltimore area: The Alan Mason Chesney Medical Archives needs a volunteer who can spend one morning or afternoon every week for several months at the Archives, located at the Mount Washington campus, 5801 Smith Avenue in Baltimore. You will help the professional staff to identify and explain the significance of the Church Home & Hospital items now in storage at the Archives.

If you can help, please call Melinda Rose at 410-955-4285.

Still Looking

If you have any knowledge of the location of the Silver Tea Service that adorned the tables of many of the CHH student teas, please notify Deb Kennedy. No questions asked. The alumnae would really like to have this as a part of the archives and CHH nursing history. It had been a gift to Miss Creutzburg, and it is engraved with either “CHI” or “CHH.” It disappeared in 1975 from the School of Nursing.
