YESTERDAY
In 1998—after a decade of work by a cadre of dedicated volunteers—the doors opened on a new Johns Hopkins University building, the School of Nursing Anne M. Pinkard Building. As the first university building to be dedicated solely to the art and science of nursing education, it was a state-of-the-art facility, prominently located on the East Baltimore campus shared by the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, the School of Medicine, and the Johns Hopkins Hospital.
TODAY
Since the opening of the Pinkard Building seven years ago, Hopkins Nursing has joined the ranks of the top 10 U.S. nursing schools and today is a national and emerging international leader in research, education, and clinical practice. As the reputation of the School grows, enrollments increase, with a record 2004 enrollment of more than 650. Faculty are nationally and internationally recognized and continue to achieve funding for new research and programs. Success has filled the Pinkard building to capacity, now straining the once generous facilities and limiting future endeavors.
TOMORROW
Hopkins Nursing has the opportunity to continue to meet the demands of the 21st century by building on yesterday’s vision of creating a home for Hopkins’ leadership in nursing. Negotiations are now underway to secure a 99-year lease and building rights with the Johns Hopkins Hospital Endowment to allow the construction of an addition to the Pinkard Building and to sustain the vision of “one location” adjacent to the other outstanding and top-ranked Hopkins facilities.
