Congratulations Class of 2011!

Congratulations Class of 2011!

December Graduation Ceremony on 12.9.11On Thursday, May 26th the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing graduated its latest class of students! 122 undergraduates and 105 graduate students received their degrees at the Frances Merrick Performing Arts Center at the Hippodrome Theatre. This was a milestone of graduations for the School of Nursing as the Traditional Class of 2011 marked the 25th graduating class since the School of Nursing has been apart of the Johns Hopkins University. Give yourselves a huge pat on the back!

If you ever happened to really look at the bottom of the Application for Admission, you’ll see a short quote that for many is the first introduction to what Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing is all about:

“Bring into the school the best possible students, provide for them…the best possible instruction, instill in them a realization of their responsibilities, send them out in the profession” This was said by Elsie Lawler, the Superintendent of the Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing from 1910-1940.

I’m sure that when applicants first read that, they are not really sure what to make of it all.  The “realization of their responsibilities”, sounds daunting doesn’t it? In one short sentence, Elsie Lawler set all the expectations that a Johns Hopkins Nursing education would be. You knew you would be in a class of talented students and you would be instructed by dedicated faculty and provided with valuable skill sets and resources. Over time you would come to realize just how important your role is in the health care field and sometimes how hard it is to do that job, but how you can make a lifetime of difference with your effort. Now the classes have ended, and you leave with degree in hand ready to take on the profession or continue in your profession with advanced skills. Elsie Lawler was right after all, wasn’t she?

Good luck and  go forth and set the world on fire!
