Dr. Bonnielin Swenor, PhD, MPH, BS has been installed as the inaugural Endowed Professor of Disability Health and Justice at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing.

The Endowed Professorship of Disability Health and Justice was established by The Maryland E-Novation Initiative Fund Authority, the estates of Ms. Charlotte B. Lockner (SON class of 1955) and Mr. Ralph S. O’Connor (University Trustee, Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, class of 1951), and Antoinette Delruelle & Joshua L. Steiner.

This endowed professorship aims to push scientific discovery and innovation and increase access and equity for all people with disabilities.

“We believe that disability is something that unites us… In so many ways disability is something that is part of all of our lives,” said Dr. Swenor.

Dr. Swenor is the founder and director of the Johns Hopkins Disability Health Research Center, which aims to shift the paradigm from “living with a disability,” to “thriving with a disability.” Dr. Swenor’s research is motivated by her own experience with disability, and takes a data-driven approach to advancing equity for people with disabilities and promoting disability inclusion and accessibility.

“Dr. Swenor has an unrelenting drive to ensure that people with disabilities are able to thrive. Her installation as an endowed chair formally acknowledges the impact her career has made as faculty, as a researcher, as an advocate, and as a leader,” remarked Dean Sarah Szanton during the ceremony.
