The Johns Hopkins School of Nursing is well-known for the many accomplishments of our students and faculty. However, there are far more people working behind the scenes to make JHSON the top nursing school that it is. This Thanksgiving, we want to acknowledge the incredible members of our staff. Their support and dedication to their work keeps JHSON moving so we can provide our award winning programs without undue stress.
Meet just a handful of our staff members:
Lawrence Waudby
Academic Program Administrator, DNP Nurse Anesthesia track
Lawrence coordinates the administrative logistics of the academic program, including orientation of newly admitted students and faculty support throughout the academic program. He also provides support for students assigned to various clinical sites and makes sure that both the clinical sites as well as the students have what is needed to meet the requirement of each site.
“I am proud of my work because I know that I am helping in the formation of future CRNA’s. When I tell students to think that they could have me as a patient in the operating room one day, I am hoping that they are doing their best to prepare to be the anesthetist for all their patients. It gives me joy to think that I am helping to prepare these students towards their future goals.”
Alexander Murphy
Assistant Director of Admissions for Diversity Initiatives and Healthcare Organizational Leadership Recruitment
Alexander Manages the admissions process for the MSN healthcare Organizational Leadership tracks, and focuses on initiatives to increase enrollment for students who have diverse backgrounds and experiences, inclusive of gender, race, ethnicity, education, geographic location, etc. These initiatives include conferences, virtual Diversity Dimensions discussions, as well as connecting prospective student with current students to further discuss experiences throughout their program of interest.
“I am very proud of the work that I do. I have been able to travel across the country to recruit students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic Serving Institutions, Tribal Colleges, and many other Minority Serving Institutions to create a space in SON that is more reflective of the world we live in today. I am happy to see how many different faces and experiences the conversations, discussions, and energy surrounding my work have brought to the School of Nursing. In the wake of the Supreme Court decision that removed race conscious admissions, my work, now more than ever, is vital to continue to recruit and enroll one of the most diverse schools at Johns Hopkins University.”
Florentina Costache
Multimedia Systems Specialist
Florentina is involved in all aspects of video production, from scheduling, recording, and editing audio and video to media management across current platforms. She also collaborates on several grant funded projects, and sets up for and supports live streams and webinars, as well as on-site events. Another big part of Florentina’s role is classroom support and AV systems troubleshooting. She manages the Help Desk integration of room systems, such as the Help function and status updates via the Fusion server, and room scheduling.
“I am proud of my work when I can make someone’s day by finding a long lost recording or the source of that elusive noise! While difficult and time consuming, it is also very rewarding to finally tune up a room to my satisfaction. The reward can be as subtle as the lack of complaints, but it is long-lasting! Prior to 2020, I designed, programmed, or upgraded most of our AV systems in the old classrooms and conference spaces. I am proud of their longevity and reliability, and also grateful for the opportunity to gain experience in all aspects of the installation.”
Mariah Frederick
Simulation Specialist II
As a specialist in the Simulation Center, Mariah typically works behind the scenes in the Simulation Center, helping with the set up and breakdown of all patient scenarios and skills sessions. She is also responsible for all Virtual Reality equipment including updates, cleaning and any required maintenance.
“I am proud of my work because working in the simulation center here at the SON I have learned so much over the years, especially since I started off as an intern in high school. Being able to learn more about manikins and their functions, what equipment or supplies are used for certain medical needs and much more. Also working in a center with an amazing SimOps Manager and SimOps team has allowed many faculty, staff, and students see the work we do then them giving the exciting energy and everyone being so thankful makes the work I do feel much more amazing.”
Special Thanks: Officer Eugene Mobley
After more than 30 years, Officer Eugene Mobley will retire from his position this December. For over three decades, Officer Mobley has been the first contact for visitors to the School of Nursing, and the first “Hello there!” each morning to staff, faculty, and students. His presence and spirit, along with protective service, have been an indelible part of the JHSON experience. Thank you Officer Mobley for your years of dedication to keeping JHSON a safe and inviting place for all. Congratulations on your retirement.
