The Johns Hopkins School of Nursing has appointed Vinciya Pandian, PhD, MBA, MSN, RN, ACNP-BC, FAANP, FAAN, to serve as Inaugural Assistant Dean of Immersive Learning and Digital Innovation and Director of the Center for Digital and Immersive Technologies. She will lead simulation, virtual and augmented reality, and the application of technology in research.

“We are excited for Dr. Pandian to take on this new role, which will fuse together innovation, research, finance, business, and practice through cutting-edge technology and nursing skills and leadership,” says Marie Nolan, PHD, MPH, RN, FAAN, interim dean of JHSON. “Throughout this past year, we have seen how critical our virtual learning opportunities have become, and Dr. Pandian’s experience and insight will help us continue to grow in these essential areas.”

With more than 25 years of experience in nursing, Pandian has served in a number of clinical and educational health care roles. At the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Pandian was an acute care nurse practitioner for 15 years caring for critically ill mechanically-ventilated patients. She served as Director of Practice, Education and Research of the Johns Hopkins Hospital Airway Program leading interdisciplinary education and practice initiatives to advance the quality of care of patients with tracheostomy. She also designed devices to increase patient ventilation and phonation.

At JHSON, Pandian has been an associate professor and associate director of the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Executive and DNP/MBA programs. Some of her professional accomplishments include serving as President-Elect for the Society of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Nurses; being inducted as a Fellow of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery, Ad Eundem, Royal College of Surgeons, Dublin, Ireland; and serving as Immediate Past President of the Nu Beta Chapter of Sigma International at JHSON.

“A defining feature of our school is its leadership in shaping the future of the nursing profession through innovation and technology,” says Pandian. “I look forward to building on the foundations we already have, partnering with nursing leaders, biomedical engineering, and other disciplines to reimagine how teaching happens, and prepare our nursing students to excel in an increasingly technology-driven workplace. The application of virtual reality, telehealth, and other immersive technologies within nursing promises to transform how nursing care is delivered to provide the safest, highest quality care possible.”
