A revision in the start date for the Accelerated Bachelor’s to MSN with Paid Clinical Residency program is giving prospective students another opportunity to apply to the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (JHUSON).
The new fall entry date for the program—and an application deadline of May 1, 2013—allows future nurses who may have missed the deadlines for other JHUSON accelerated bachelor’s programs to consider this unique offering: a BS to MSN program that includes a one-year paid residency and future full-time employment at a Johns Hopkins hospital.
Although deadlines have now passed for the Accelerated Bachelor’s 13-month Summer entry program and , applications will continue to be accepted from prospective students who already hold a bachelor’s degree in another discipline and are seeking intense educational and clinical experiences. The small (25 students), four-year program provides a fast track to a bachelor of science degree and an RN license, followed by a year-long paid clinical residency at one of the School’s partner hospitals. After the year concludes, the residency becomes full-time employment at the same hospital, while students continue part-time studies for the MSN Clinical Nurse Specialist.
Faculty members JoAnne Silbert-Flagg, DNP, CPNP, and Julie Stanik-Hutt, PhD, ACNP, CCNS, work closely with the program and are key proponents of changing the start date from January to late August. Flagg notes, "A fall start for the 17-month BS portion of the program offers students greater opportunities to interact with a larger group of students [other accelerated programs], take advantage of additional learning experiences, and have scheduled breaks between courses to refresh and visit family." Stanik-Hutt adds the program is a perfect match "for students who have a passion for nursing and want to have a bigger impact on the profession. The accelerated baccalaureate followed by a clinical residency will jump start their professional career by combining practice with preparation for clinical leadership as a Clinical Nurse Specialist."
