nursing schoolIn an effort to increase faculty development, foster nurse leaders of all stripes, promote nursing education, and attract and retain the brightest academic minds, five Maryland schools of nursing—led by the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (JHUSON)--have launched an annual Academic Leadership Academy.

The first, “Discovering Leadership for the Future,” will be held January 13-17 at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (JHUSON), where Pamela R. Jeffries, PhD, RN, FAAN, Vice Provost of Digital Initiatives, has spearheaded the effort. It will feature 20 hand-picked participants from JHUSON as well as the nursing programs at Coppin State University, Stevenson University, Towson University, and the University of Maryland.

The schools’ shared goals are to:

  • Enhance the skills of current leaders, provide succession planning, and develop emerging leaders in the academic and clinical arenas.
  • Promote nursing education as a desired career path by developing academic nurse leaders and providing support to them.
  • Recruit and keep quality faculty.

Participants were required to submit a leadership project to be addressed at the Academy, which will also offer workshops on Leading Change & Managing Transitions; Boundary Spanning Leadership; Systems Thinking; Conflict Management; Leadership Style; Professionalism & Role Modeling; and Leadership Presence & Inspiring Others.

Participation in the Academy also will include bi-monthly followup meetings in March, May, July, September, and November 2014.

The initiative is funded by a Nurse Support Program (NSP II) grant from the State of Maryland.
