school of nursingJohns Hopkins University School of Nursing faculty members Laura Taylor and Martha Sylvia have been honored by their students for being nurturing, supportive, challenging, and overall advocates of the nursing profession. 

The Johns Hopkins University Alumni Association Excellence in Teaching Awards are presented to faculty who stand out in their role as teacher and mentor.

Taylor, PhD, RN, assistant professor, Department of Health Systems and Outcomes, received the Undergraduate Excellence in Teaching Award. “[Taylor] motivates students through her personal enthusiasm, which is contagious,” a nominating student wrote. “[S]he has effectively nurtured, challenged, and supported me in the transition from uncertain student to successful graduate and novice practitioner.”

Sylvia, PhD, MSN, MBA, RN, instructor, Department of Health Systems and Outcomes, received the Graduate Excellence in Teaching Award. In the nomination form, one student commented, “Dr. Sylvia clearly communicates a vision for nursing. She is a strong advocate for the advancement of nursing scholarship…[she] is also a strong and vocal advocate and role model for nurse-led, evidence-based quality improvement work by DNP students.”

The award, which has been given annually since 1992, allows each academic division of the university to publicly recognize the critical importance of teaching. The nomination and selection processes differ by school, but students must be involved in the selection.
