Join us for a screening of the documentary Charm City and a community discussion with Delegate Stephanie Smith, which will examine local context around racism that caused and continues health inequity. We will discuss areas such as: policy; the practice of segregation, federally, statewide and local; Resulting norms and coping behaviors in communities of color, especially African American communities; Long term effects on local outcomes as well as the unforeseen social impacts for communities of color, especially African American communities.

About Charm City (from the Charm City film website)

On the streets of Baltimore, shooting is rampant, the murder rate is approaching an all-time high and the distrust of the police is at a fever pitch. With nerves frayed and neighborhoods in distress, dedicated community leaders, compassionate law-enforcement officers and a progressive young city councilman try to stem the epidemic of violence. Filmed over three tumultuous years covering the lead up to, and aftermath of, Freddie Gray’s death in police custody, CHARM CITY is an intimate cinema verité portrait of those surviving in, and fighting for, the vibrant city they call home. Directed by renowned documentary producer Marilyn Ness (Cameraperson; Trapped; E-Team).

      About Delegate Stephanie Smith

Stephanie M. Smith is an Assistant Director for Equity, Engagement and Communications in the City of Baltimore’s Department of Planning.

In this inaugural role, Stephanie leads the implementation of the agency’s “Equity in Planning Action Plan” and its overall communications program. Prior to joining municipal government leadership, Stephanie worked in the federal policy arena advancing public health, voting rights, affordable housing and environmental justice for the most vulnerable communities. A former Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Fellow, Stephanie is passionate about including the voices of underrepresented populations in policy making because she knows that “if you aren’t at the table, then you’re on the menu!”.

In 2018, Stephanie was elected to the House of Delegates in the Maryland General Assembly. She serves on the House Ways and Means
Committee and sits on the Local Revenues and Education Subcommittees.
