    • 2017 JHU SON Haiti Medical Mission Donation Drive Time: All Day Location: 525 North Wolfe Street, Baltimore MD Details:
In October of 2017, a team from the SON comprised of nurse practitioner graduate students and faculty members will travel to rural Haiti to provide basic primary care to impoverished families in Léon, a mountain community in the southwest.

This Haiti Medical Mission Program is a well-established, international nursing experience at the SON and teams have been going there for the past 18 years. The SON team will join with other physician, nurse, pharmacist, translator, and lay volunteers in Haiti. Using a multi-disciplinary approach, the team will care for adults and children of all ages presenting to the clinic with a wide variety of health problems.

In addition to seeing patients in clinic, our team also plans a public health initiative, specifically focussed on school-based pediatric dental health care.

During times when so many need so much in so many places, the team recognizes that resources everywhere are stretched precariously thin. However, they would still like to extend the invitation to all members of the JHU community to participate as they wish. The team is seeking donations of any size to assist with this project.

Donation boxes will be placed in the SON main entrance from September 18, 2017 to September 29, 2017 for anyone to drop off the following:

      ***Toothbrushes
***Dollar Story Reading Glass (2.0 or 2.5 power) - (not prescription)
Cash donations also welcome and the team will then purchase these and other needed medical supplies.

Experts in Pain Management to Speak at Sept. 25 Pain Symposium

As the opioid overdose epidemic continues, hospitals and health systems are recognizing the need to effectively manage patients' pain while preventing new cases of opioid addiction. But what does that mean in practice? Attend the Johns Hopkins Pain Symposium on Monday, September 25, in the Chevy Chase Bank Auditorium to learn more about this public health crisis and how we can help tame it.

The event will feature expert speakers in pain management, drug policy and patient safety from the schools of Medicine and Public Health, as well as remarks by Maryland Lt. Gov. Boyd Rutherford, chair of the Maryland Heroin and Opioid Emergency Task Force. Participants will hear about the components of responsible prescribing, learn from clinical experts working on the front lines of pain management and opioid stewardship, and discuss the larger systemic and public health issues affecting the opioid epidemic.

Registration is free for all Johns Hopkins Medicine and Johns Hopkins University employees, but space is limited. Can't attend in person? Register to live-stream the event. Learn more or register today.

    • Applying Human Factors Engineering Methods to Persistent Patient Safety Challenges in the Neonatal ICU Time: 12:00pm - 1:30pm Location: SON 305-Pinkard Bldg Details:

The Office for Science and Innovation is pleased to host Dr. Heather Tubbs Cooley who will lead a workshop entitled ‘Applying Human Factors Engineering Methods to Persistent Patient Safety Challenges in the Neonatal ICU’. She is a Nurse Scientist at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and holds an appointment as an Associate Professor, Research, at the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing.

Critically-ill neonates have the highest rate of central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) among all groups of hospitalized children, and CLABSI is most likely to occur after line insertion as central lines are frequently accessed for medication administration and infusions. National quality improvement initiatives demonstrate progress in lowering neonatal infection rates through guideline-driven central line care, yet gains are often unsustained due to waning guideline adherence at the front lines. The Systems Analysis of Guideline Adherence in Neonatal Intensive Care study, or SAGA study, is identifying barriers to and facilitators of nurses’ sustained adherence to safety guidelines through application of human factors engineering methods. Preliminary results from observations and interviews with nurses will be presented along with a discussion of implications for direct care providers, hospital leaders, and the patient safety research community.

    • Bioethics Seminar: Toward a Jamesian Account of Trauma and Healing Time: 12:00pm - 1:00pm Location: Bloomberg School of Public Health, Feinstone Hall Details:

This event is open to all. Lunch will be provided.

Shannon Sullivan, PhD, MA, is the Chair of Philosophy and Professor of Philosophy and Health Psychology at UNC Charlotte. She specializes in feminist philosophy, critical philosophy of race, American philosophy (especially pragmatism), and continental philosophy.

This presentation will use William James's theory of emotion as bodily change to develop an account of trauma as fully and non-reductively psychophysiological. Drawing from examples of PTSD experienced by both soldiers and victims of sexual assault, I argue that because trauma involves bodily movement and change, so should successful healing and recovery from trauma.
