    • Discrimination Journal Club Time: 12:00pm - 1:00pm Locations: 525 North Wolfe Street, Baltimore MD Details:

      The objective of this journal club is to facilitate an open space for discussions regarding relationships between racial discrimination and health outcomes. Journal article topics will include experiences of racism across the lifespan for different racial and ethnic groups, and different levels of racism (e.g. interpersonal, institutional, structural). 

      Our next meeting will be on Wednesday March 4th from 12-1:00 p.m. in the School of Nursing Room 324. We are thrilled to have Marlena Fisher as our guest moderator. Marlena is a nurse researcher with expertise in nephrology care and advanced care planning. She will be guiding our discussion of "Everyday Discrimination and Kidney Function Among Older Adults: Evidence From the Health and Retirement Study” by Cobb et al. in the Journal of Gerontology.

      Please join the Community Health Interest Group (CHIG) and the Pediatric Interest Group (PIG) in educating young students in Baltimore about lung health and the dangers of vaping and smoking. Become a volunteer for the "Lung Health Ambassador Program," sponsored by Medicine for the Greater Good and The Baltimore Breathe Center, both part of Johns Hopkins Medicine.       The Office for Science and Innovation (OSI) is pleased to announce that Dr. Melissa Hladek, will be leading a presentation entitled, “Training & Techniques for Research Interviews” designed for anyone involved in data collection from research participants.

      Are you involved in research participant interviews? Have you ever thought about the best techniques for conducting research interviews? A research interview is different from a clinical encounter with a patient and requires specific ethics and techniques. Come learn about common interview pitfalls and ways to avoid them to ensure your data is collected appropriately.

      Topics to be covered include, role of the interviewer, professional neutrality, training the respondent, non-direct probing, communication, and accurately recording answers. Scenarios will be used throughout to illustrate best practices.

      The SON Mental Health Grad Network is hosting a Mental Health First Aid Training on Saturday, March 14th from 9am – 5pm at the SON, Room 217!  Lunch will be served.

      Mental Health First Aid is a course that teaches you how to help someone who may be experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge. The training helps you identify, understand and respond to signs of addictions and mental illnesses.

      Today, more women are ascending to leadership positions in schools and colleges of public health.

      And no school has trained more women deans than the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Currently, six Bloomberg School alumnae serve as deans of public health schools and colleges accredited by the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health.

      On March 23, our own Dean Ellen MacKenzie will join her fellow alumnae for a conversation on women rising to leadership in the field.

      The Institute for Excellence in Education (IEE) and the Office of the Vice Dean for Education of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and the Johns Hopkins University School of Education were pleased to co-sponsor this year's IEE Education Conference and Celebration.

      IEE is very proud and excited to bring this annual conference to Hopkins' community of seasoned and budding educators, including many students and trainees. It is specifically designed to provide a venue in which those interested in medical and biomedical education from across the Schools of Medicine, Nursing and Public Health can come together to share ideas, educational research, innovations, and instructional methodologies; to learn from each other and guests, promote a community of educators, and celebrate our great teachers and educators.
