Dealing with the ongoing misinformation crisis — and those who fuel it — can be a challenge for anyone in the health sciences who uses Twitter. Join us for a conversation with Dr. Joshua Sharfstein about the promises and pitfalls of using Twitter for health science communication.

Joshua Sharfstein, MD

Dr. Sharfstein is Vice Dean for Public Health Practice and Community Engagement, director of the Bloomberg American Health Initiative, and Professor of the Practice in Health Policy and Management. Previously, he served as the Secretary of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the Principal Deputy Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, as Commissioner of Health for Baltimore City, and as health policy advisor for Congressman Henry A. Waxman. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and the National Academy of Public Administration.

Lost Loved Ones Support Group for Health Professional Students

Join us on December 8 for a support group for those who have lost loved ones. We are providing a space in which students who are planning to go into the healthcare field can speak about past trauma (specifically related to losing a loved one). This support group is meant to help students work through the emotional reactions to information we are learning as it relates to the death of a loved one. Those of us that who have gone through the process of losing someone so close, can understand that while this learning experience will provide us the tools to be empathetic, understanding, equipped nurses, the topics can be very triggering.

My name is Izzy Mangan, and I know this from personal experience. My dad died of esophageal cancer in 2019, and within the first semester I have had to grapple with being taught about he suffered, was treated, and eventually died. I know I’m not the only one who has had this happen, and I’d like to connect with others so we can provide support, connection, and growth to each other.

This group is meant for people who have undergone the loss or are going through the loss of someone very close to them and are worried about/have already encountered discussions that are triggering. If you are someone who has experienced this or you are worried about how the loss of a family member/partner/loved one will affect your nursing career, this is the group for you.

Join us for a Zoom info session where we will answer your questions regarding our online prerequisite courses and provide a virtual tour of some of our classrooms. You'll get the chance to see how the courses are setup, what laboratory assignments might look like, and get a general feel for what it is like taking your prerequisite courses with us.

Join us for our next Diversity Dimensions Experience Virtual Information Session at 3 p.m. ET on Wednesday, December 15. Focusing on Johns Hopkins School of Nursing's commitment to diversity and inclusion in our admissions process. Each month will highlight a different focus on the diverse and unique population of our students and applicants and the potential impact on the profession of nursing. 

For this month, we will focus on mental health and nurse resiliency throughout the pandemic and ongoing and how Johns Hopkins School of Nursing and the nursing community at large. We will explore initiatives and ways to support nurse resiliency and mental health, both as a student and a nursing professional.
