    • Health Care Considerations for Space Flight: A new role for nurses? Time: 6:00pm - 7:00pm Locations: Online Details:

Topic: Health Care Considerations for Space Flight: A new role for nurses?

      Speaker: Mark Shelhamer

      Learning Objectives:

      1. Understand the main physiological and psychological effects of long-duration spaceflight.
      2. Identify the interactions between some of these effects.
      3. Consider ways in which to address combined cross-disciplinary effects.

      Webinar description:

When astronauts venture into space they are subject to a great variety of physical and psychological stressors, which can lead to health problems and performance deficits. These issues are going to be more severe as NASA ventures back to the moon and on to Mars, where more demanding missions are combined with the need for significant crew autonomy – and that autonomy includes dealing with medical issues. At the other end of the spaceflight spectrum, commercial operators will start sending non-professional passengers into space, starting with suborbital flights (which are already happening) and leading to orbital flights. These passengers will have a variety of health and fitness levels, which may lead to some novel health concerns. This presentation will discuss the major stressors of spaceflight, their impact on the human body, and how the resulting medical issues might be addressed. Come and join us to find out how nurses can play a role in addressing the health issues of astronauts and civilians travel to space.
