FAQ's - SMDM COVID-19 Decision Modeling Grant

  • Who is eligible?
    Modelers who have submitted a model description of their research to the SMDM repository and/or are willing to submit modeling description from the output of this grant opportunity to the public-facing SMDM repository. Demonstrated ability to manage grant awards from U.S. federal or private sponsors.
  • Can I apply if I am outside of the US?
    Yes, however applicants must show a demonstrated ability to manage grants from U.S. federal or private sponsors.
  • What is required of me?
    Grant recipients will be expected to submit an abstract on research progress on September 14, 2020 and a final report upon completion of their project. Recipients will also convene for two virtual retreats on September 18, 2020 and November 18, 2020 to present and share their findings.
  • When will award decisions be made?
    Grant decisions will be made on a rolling basis in an effort to accommodate the time sensitive nature of projects.
  • What if I don’t hear back?
    You will be notified immediately via email if your application is chosen for an award. If you do not hear back we ask that you please refrain from inquiring on the status of your proposal as we receive many applications.
  • Is it better to customize our proposal to be specific to US contexts or to make it fit multiple national contexts?
    We welcome both US and international applicants, and the proposal does not need to be tailored to a US context.
  • Are applications encouraged to work with one specific/individual decision maker on one specific decision question or would input engagement from multiple decision makers on a common wide arching problem be considered favorable?
    You can work with one or multiple decision makers, as long as you are able to have a good dissemination plan for how you would convey your findings.
  • Do we need multiple letters of support?
    No, only include one letter of support.
  • Are early career PI welcomed?
  • Are there any restrictions on how the money can be used?

    Similar to other grants, the money can only be used for the work that’s proposed and done.

  • Can the grant money be used for summer salary?
  • Are non-awardees encouraged to submit models or share the models through the SMDM portal?
    Yes, we courage both awardees and non-awardees to submit their model descriptions.
