Alumni Community Week

We invite all Johns Hopkins School of Nursing alumni and the nursing community to join us for Alumni Community Week, September 26 – September 30, 2022. Programming will include both in-person and virtual events.

• New Nurse Mentoring Meet-Up (virtual) - Wednesday, September 28th

  New Nurse Mentoring Meet-Up (virtual)
  Wednesday, September 28th | 6-7pm ET

  Beginning your first job as a new nurse can be daunting. To help ease the transition, increase confidence, and nurture the unique leadership qualities of all Hopkins Nurses, we will be hosting a virtual mentorship event for alumni from the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Entry into Nursing program. Geared towards new nurses, we are asking for alumni who graduated from the MSN (Entry) program in 2017-2019 to offer their guidance to more recent alumni from the program (2020-2022).

  This mentorship opportunity will be a virtual event and will only require a one-hour time commitment. Each mentor will be paired with a recent graduate. During the virtual interaction over Zoom, mentors are encouraged to listen, support, advise, and assist their mentee with the transition to becoming a nurse.

  Heterogeneity in Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factor Prevalence Among Ethnic Minority Populations in the United States.

  Dr. Diana Baptiste, ’13, Dr. Binu Koirala, ’19 and PhD candidate Sabrina Elias will discuss psychosocial, environmental, and social factors impacting cardiovascular risk among ethnic minority groups living in the United States, implications for nursing care, and examine the cardiovascular risk factors among ethnic sub-groups.

  The Virtual Nursing Grand Rounds will offer attendees one free contact hour for Nursing Continued Professional Development upon completion of a post-event quiz after each session, with the goal of fulfilling the JHSON’s mission of providing lifelong learning for health care professionals within the community.

  Join us for the Annual JHNAA Business Meeting where you will learn more about the activities of the board this past year. There will be committee updates, elections, and recognition of 2022 alumni award recipients. We will also recognize Dr. Jane Ball, ’69, ’74 for her many contributions to the alumni association during her term as president.

  Following the Business Meeting, we invite you to hear an update on the School of Nursing from Dean Sarah L. Szanton, ’93, ’07.

  Nurses are critical to solving our most pressing and persistent health challenges. The social reckoning, ongoing pandemic, and other health inequities have highlighted opportunities for nurse leaders, clinicians, and researchers to drive structural changes for their unique contexts. Responding to evolving imperatives of the nursing profession, this event will explore the role of nurses in promoting equity in shared decision making to drive health outcomes and dismantle practices that perpetuate racism and oppression.

  Attendees will enjoy cocktails and refreshments as they engage in a peer dialogue about ways to integrate principles of social justice into nursing practice and health policy in one of the following discussions:
  1.    Breaking Down Structures that Perpetuate Racism and Affect Health Outcomes
  2.    Multi-Level Interventions to Address Social Determinants of Health across the Lifespan
  3.    Holistic Approaches to Advance Health Outcomes across the Lifespan

  Thursday, October 7

  Virtual Nursing Grand Rounds, with Dr. Craig Pollack, Katey Ayers Endowed Associate Professor |12:00 – 1:00 pm EDT
  The Johns Hopkins School of Nursing in partnership with the Nu Beta at Large Chapter of Sigma will offer a monthly Virtual Nursing Grand Rounds Continuing Nursing Education Series, providing an educational program led by top researchers from around the world. Attendees who stay for the entire event are eligible to receive one CNE credit.

  Dr. Craig Pollack is the inaugural Katey Ayers Endowed Associate Professor in the School of Nursing with a joint appointment in the Department of Health Policy and Management in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He is a practicing internal medicine physician whose research focuses on social determinants of health with an emphasis on housing policy. In the setting of the COVID pandemic, he has been researching how laws that promote housing stability impact COVID transmission and mental health.

  In order to obtain your CNE credit, you must register for the event and complete a post-event evaluation survey that will be emailed to you shortly after the event. You will obtain your CNE certificate one to two business days after the due date for completing the evaluation form.

  Virtual Wine Tasting, with Vino 301 | 7:00 – 8:00pm EDT
  Join your fellow alumni for a virtual wine tasting, guided by a professional wine concierge. After registering for the event, you will be emailed the accompanying tasting sheet. We Will be sampling the 2018 Brown Estate House of Brown Chardonnay and the 2017 Charles Woodson’s Intercept Red Blend.

  If you decide to purchase the two wines on your own, attendance is $15 per household. If you would like us to mail you the wines, attendance is $55 per household. If you would like the wines mailed to your home, please register for the event by September 27.

  JHNAA Alumni Conversation: Nurses as Change Agents for Health Equity (Maternal and Child Health) | 11:30 – 1:00pm EDT
  The Johns Hopkins Nurses’ Alumni Association invites all JHSON alumni to participate in this discussion about nurses as agents in health equity and public policy to support maternal and child health. Speakers will be announced soon.

  JHNAA Business Meeting and Q&A with Dean Sarah Szanton | 5:00 – 6:30pm EDT
  Alumni Weekend comes to a close with the annual business meeting. During the business meeting, there will be committee updates, elections, and recognition of 2021 alumni award recipients and milestone reunion classes – including the 50th reunion class, the Class of 1971.

  Afterward, we invite you to join Dr. Jane Ball, ’69, the president of the Johns Hopkins Nurses’ Alumni Association (JHNAA) in a fireside chat with the fifth dean of the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, Dr. Sarah Szanton, ’96, ’07.
