Carolyn J. Cumpsty Fowler, PhD, MPH
For much of her career, Carolyn Cumpsty Fowler has worked to build bridges between academic public health and the practice community. Following training in nursing and midwifery at the Carinus Nursing College and the University of Cape Town (UCT), Dr. Fowler worked in neurosurgery and oncology before beginning her training and career in public health and injury prevention. After receiving her PhD at UCT in 1991, Dr. Fowler moved to Baltimore for a postdoctoral fellowship in Injury Prevention with Professor Susan Baker at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHSPH). Since 1993, she has been on the faculty of the Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy, and since 1998, she has served as faculty director for the Johns Hopkins Summer Institute Principles and Practice of Injury Prevention. Dr. Fowler was part of the SAVIR-Safe States Alliance National Training Initiative team that developed the National Core Competencies for Injury and Violence Prevention. From 1999-2010, while maintaining a faculty appointment at JHSPH, Dr. Fowler led the injury prevention program in the Baltimore County Department of Health’s Bureau of Public Health Nursing and chaired the County’s Child Death Review Team. In July 2010, following a five-year joint-appointment, Dr. Fowler joined JHSON as full-time faculty and now serves as the school’s evaluation coordinator. She continues to hold a joint appointment at JHSPH and is director of evaluation and core public health skills training at the MidAtlantic Public Health Training Center. She remains engaged in public health and evaluation practice and serves on the Maryland Injury Prevention Partnership Advisory Board and Regional Network Leader team. Dr. Fowler is chair of the Board of Scientific Counselors for the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control at the Centers for Disease Control.
